Join Canadian Dam Association (CDA) members and non-members in New Brunswick for an exciting 2-hour in-person event at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton Campus) to learn about recent advancements on a number of initiatives related to the future of tailings dams.

Why attend?

There are a number of important initiatives being advanced by the Canadian Dam Association (CDA) and the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) related to tailings. 

In 2024, Andy Small, with his colleagues Annika Bjelkevik and Andrew Witte, wrote a paper that looked out to 2030 and imagined what tailings engineering could look like.  That paper was written with input from over 100 colleagues from around the world and covered topics such as: competency and capacity, tailings technologies, closure, site characterization, surveillance, and design approaches.  It reviewed the situation in 2024 and offered comments on what 2030 could look like.  There have been significant advancements on a number of the initiatives presented in that paper and Andy will provide an overview of these initiatives including:

• Risk Informed Closure Design for Tailings Storage Facilities (CDA)
• ICOLD Bulletin 194 on Tailings Dam Safety guidance
• Slope stability for tailings dams (ICOLD)
• Engineer of Record (CDA)

Andy will spend 15 to 20 minutes on each topic and there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion.

There will be an opportunity to meet and greet colleagues from 6:30 to 7:00 and the presentation will start at 7:00.
