About the Speaker
Gavin Hayes is a retired Police Staff Sergeant, former Public Safety-911 Communications Centre Manager, PTSD survivor, and member of the APCO Canada Board of Directors. During his 31-year career in municipal policing, he served in frontline, investigative, supervisory, leadership, and public safety communications roles.
He has served as President of APCO Canada on two occasions and has remained involved in supporting the emergency communications profession. Drawing on his professional background and lived experience, Gavin advocates for telecommunicator wellness, greater mental health awareness, reduced stigma, and psychologically healthier workplaces within public safety organizations.
Speaking Engagements
Gavin is available to speak with communications centres, public safety associations and retiree associations, emergency service agencies, healthcare organizations, leadership groups, educational institutions, and conference audiences about the issues discussed in this article.
His presentations draw on lived experience and leadership lessons to encourage honest conversations about psychological injury, cumulative trauma, PTSD, resilience, recovery, stigma, self-advocacy, and the responsibility of organizations to care for the people who serve their communities.
