In this presentation and armchair discussion with attendees, Lenny Joe will provide a brief overview of the Forestry Council and their role in First Nations forestry. He will then reflect on his perspective of where BC First Nations are in the current economic climate, and his vision of the path forward to ensuring full participation of First Nations in the forest sector in the future. Lenny will discuss the need to develop readiness from all parties and will provide some examples of work being done by the Forestry Council which is contributing to building readiness across the sector and successes for First Nations.

Participants attending this session will:

  1. Gain an understanding of the role and purpose of the BC First Nations Forestry Council.
  2. Gain an understanding of how the implementation of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) and the modernization of forestry policy in the province is shifting the way we approach forestry in BC.
  3. Be provided with concrete examples of current priorities and initiatives that are underway at the Forestry Council, including: the FNFC Opportunity Register, the FNFC/MOF working group, and the provincial Value Added Accelerators regional tables.
