Fons has been involved in wildfire and forestry operations for 20 years now and has been working as the Senior Wildfire Officer managing the prevention program in the Southeast Fire Center for the past six years. His operational functions with the BC Wildfire Service include fire behavior specialist, operations section officer, regional wildfire coordination officer, and burn boss. His prevention program oversees the legal and legislative aspects of wildfire, the Prescribed Fire and Fuels Management programs, the Fire Smart program, hazard abatement, as well as the operational aspects of fire management plans and forest landscape planning.
Prior to his current role, alongside his career in wildfire management and response, he worked as Forest Technologist primarily harvesting operations and silviculture before moving into the ecosystem restoration side of the business focusing on developing and monitoring prescribed burn projects. His focus these days revolves around fire management planning and integrating fire back into the land base in both prescribed and natural circumstances.
