Rebecca is of Scots and Irish settler ancestry on her father Patrick’s side and mixed-Indigenous Kanaka Hawaiian, Métis, and Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, as well as French and English settler ancestry on her mother Shannon’s side.
During her 28-day shifts as Chef aboard the Atlantic Eagle – an Emergency Tow Vessel owned by Atlantic Towing Limited – Rebecca gets to see the coast of British Columbia including Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii from her galley porthole while she prepares breakfast, lunch, and dinner for her crew - and keeps an eye out for whales and other wildlife! On her 28 days off after each shift she enjoys writing newsletter articles and guest blog posts about her experiences, and has also recently enrolled as a student in the Bachelor of Technology - Trades and Technology Leadership program at Thompson Rivers University, where she was delighted to discover that her Red Seal counts for credits towards this degree.
Rebecca is pleased to be a part of a network of skilled tradeswomxn connected by the BC Centre for Women in the Trades whose aim is to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive skilled trades industry where all feel welcome, healthy, respected, and safe. She hopes to inspire other people including those from underrepresented groups to realize the personal and professional fulfillment that comes from a career in the trades, as she has found on her journey from unskilled labourer through apprenticeship to Red Seal Endorsement and now to taking on a University degree.
