Signal Overload: Preparing ECCs for the Surge of Internet of Things Alerts
Description
The landscape of emergency monitoring has undergone a radical transformation—from static landlines and VoIP, to mobile and now multi-sensor driven alerts. As emergency communication centers (ECCs) adapt to an increasingly connected world, the next frontier is already here: the Internet of Things (IoT). This session explores the evolution of emergency monitoring and presents a forward-looking perspective on how ECCs can prepare for the coming surge of data from vehicles, wearables, home devices, and industrial systems. Using real-world experience from Northern911, one of Canada’s leading emergency monitoring hubs, we will examine:
- The historical evolution of emergency call types (landline → VoIP → wireless → sensor-based alerts)
- Common and emerging IoT device types used for emergency alerting
- Key challenges: false alarms, multi-sensor duplication, and increased call volume
- The role of tools such as AI co-pilots and automation in filtering, analyzing, and prioritizing sensor data to support ECCs
- Operational and policy considerations for integrating this new era of emergency alerts
