Riprap is a common form of erosion protection on upstream dam faces (protection against wave action) and in spillways and diversion channels. Numerous technical references exist for riprap design, but guidance on selecting field methods for measuring placed riprap gradations is relatively limited. This paper compares two field-based methods for evaluating riprap gradations: the Wolman Count method and WipFrag (WipWare) image analysis software. These field-based methods are applicable to estimating in-situ riprap gradations during construction and post-construction, such as during dam safety reviews. The results of these two methods are compared for four case studies, which cover a wide range of sizes and gradations. The paper also outlines key considerations for quality control and quality assurance on riprap construction projects. Based on the results of the four case studies, WipFrag is a viable method that should be considered for riprap quality assurance purposes.
