Description

A structured methodology was developed to identify new hydropower opportunities in Ivory Coast as part of the update of the national hydropower potential for CI Energies. Given the country’s moderate relief, the initial approach focused on gravity dams and combined topographic analysis with a multi-criteria framework integrating energy production, construction and grid connection costs, and environmental constraints. A hydrological assessment updated water resource availability using data from 30 gauging stations. Regionalized discharge mapping was integrated with topographic information in a Geographic Information System (GIS) to identify locations with sufficient hydraulic head and flow to achieve a minimum installed capacity of 10 MW. The screening tool was calibrated using existing Ivorian dams (10 m, 30 m, and 50 m heights) and incorporates infrastructure, land-use, and environmental datasets to estimate feasibility constraints and development costs. Candidate sites are compiled into a cartographic atlas for localization and prioritization. The methodology was subsequently extended to Run-of-River (RoR) schemes through a hydro-morphological screening process. Using DEM-derived drainage networks and regionalized hydrological data, the approach evaluates the joint availability of discharge and head along river reaches to identify technically feasible RoR configurations. A final multi-criteria analysis ranks both dam and RoR projects according to technical-economic performance (including LCOE), environmental and infrastructure impacts, and administrative constraints. The result is a prioritized portfolio of candidate projects presented in an atlas to support future investigations.
