NB Power is advancing refurbishment planning for Unit 3 at the Beechwood Generating Station, a run-of-river hydroelectric facility on the Saint John River in New Brunswick. As with many aging hydro assets, refurbishment decisions require defensible field data that can quantify condition in large, complex spaces where access is difficult, costly, and constrained by outage windows. A comprehensive condition record of the Unit 3 water passage and related components was developed in consultation with Bradley Engineering Ltd. and AECOM. A purpose-built photogrammetric inspection workflow was used to produce a high-resolution 3D model extending from the intake to the tailrace, enabling detailed visual and spatial review without repeated confined-space entry. A laser tracker control network was integrated to provide high-accuracy reference control for dimensional verification and comparison with historical drawings. Where photogrammetry was not suitable, linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) measurements were used to capture direct clearance data. The program produced a navigable 3D model, 2D cross sections, concrete defect maps, dimensional analyses of critical features, and surface degradation assessments. These deliverables supported evaluation of water-passage concrete, embedded components, runner blade-tip gaps, discharge ring shape and cavitation, head gate gain alignment, and stator/rotor air gaps. The dataset is being used to support refurbishment planning and will provide a geometric baseline for future computational fluid dynamics modelling. The case study demonstrates that the most effective inspection approach is use-case driven, with photogrammetry, survey-grade control, and targeted precision measurements selected according to the engineering decisions they are intended to support.
