Jón Haukur Steingrímsson is an engineering geologist with more than 30 years of professional experience in construction supervision, geological site investigations, and engineering design projects in Iceland, Greenland, and Norway. His work has spanned a wide range of sectors, including hydropower development, tunnelling, transmission lines, road construction, avalanche and landslide mitigation, as well as the design of outdoor recreational areas and trail systems.

Jón Haukur has been an active volunteer member of the Icelandic Search and Rescue teams for over 40 years. Since volcanic activity resumed on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula in 2021, following an 800-year dormant period, he has been part of an engineering team responsible for developing and implementing mitigation measures to protect critical infrastructure in the area.

Since 2021, the region has experienced 12 volcanic eruptions, large-scale evacuations of nearby communities, and significant impacts on infrastructure. Through the construction of more than 12 kilometres of protective and lava-deflecting barriers, the mitigation efforts have so far proven successful in reducing risk and safeguarding key assets.
