Dr. Luis Torres-Cruz
Teck Professor in Tailings Management and Innovation,
Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, UBC
Prof. Luis Torres-Cruz holds a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from Wits University and joined UBC’s Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering in 2024 as the Teck Professor in Tailings Management and Innovation. Focusing on preventing catastrophic tailings dam failures, his achievements include twice winning the SAICE Jennings Award, co-authoring a key 2022 paper on tailings dam geotechnics, and investigating the Jagersfontein TSF failure. He is a UK chartered engineer and ICE member.

Fiona Esford
Principal Geotechnical Engineer
MASc, P.Eng
Fiona Esford is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with 30 years' experience in mine waste management. She holds a BASc from Waterloo and an MASc from UBC and co-chairs the Canadian Dam Association's Mining Dams Committee. After beginning in environmental consulting, Fiona moved into the design, construction and operation of tailings and water management facilities, serving as Engineer of Record and as design engineer for dams in cold climate and Arctic conditions. Her projects span North and South America, Australia and Finland.

The networking event is at the Earth Sciences Building (ESB) Room 1012, 2207 Main Mall, University of British Columbia Campus.
Refreshments will be provided in the ESB Main Floor Lobby, directly outside the lecture theatre, before and after the technical session.
