Name
RF Interference Detection and Mitigation using Software Defined Receivers
Description
The presentation is on detecting and mitigating uplink band radio frequency interference, and how it impacts the quality of first-responder communications. I will explain tools that have been developed in-house by E-Comm Engineering that are used to identify the interference, assess the risk it poses to communication, record the interference, and steps to take to eliminate it. I can provide examples of how the tools have been used to clean up the radio spectrum used by first-responders in the Vancouver, BC area, and how the changes significantly increase the reliability of E-Comm’s radio system.
This topic will be of interest to attendees as this project was initiated as part of our preparation for FIFA 2026 being hosted across North America, including host cities Toronto and Vancouver. This system will reduce our response and mitigation time if an interference event occurs during the tournament. Day to day, the system is programmed to watch for interference caused by illegal emitters and misconfigured bi-directional amplifiers used on E-Comm's network.
Kyle Giroux, Manager of Wireless Engineering and Operations will be a co-presenter and will talk and answer to the FIFA 2026 initiatives.
