Description

Site C is the third dam and hydroelectric generating station on the Peace River in northeastern British Columbia, and went into full operation in August 2025. Site C is rated for 1230 MW of capacity and will produce approximately 5100 GWh of electricity each year. The Site C spillway is designed for a maximum discharge capacity of 16,700 m3/s, and consists of a main and auxiliary section. This paper describes features incorporated into the design of the Site C spillway to ensure BC Hydro’s dam safety and operational reliability criteria would be met, considering: - the unique geological characteristics of the spillway foundation; - - - - environmental limits on total dissolved gas during spilling; the requirement for sustained cold weather operation; post-seismic operability; and long term maintenance. Specific topics discussed include the spillway layout, the gate and hoist selection, the gate heating systems, and the redundancy features in the gate hoist controls and power supplies.  Also discussed is BC Hydro’s experience operating the spillway continuously throughout winter, from September 2024 to March 2025, during the reservoir filling and early operations period of the facility.
