Name
Breakout: Bridging Generations: Mentorship and Knowledge Sharing in Forestry
Date & Time
Thursday, February 5, 2026, 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
Description

Forestry is a profession rooted not only in science and practice but in relationships, values, and experiences. Mentorship has always played a role in professional forestry but it is more essential now than ever. Statistics show that 15 years ago, there were roughly 11 potential RPF mentors for every trainee (1:11); today that ratio has dropped to 1:5. There’s no doubt the forestry profession has undergone significant changes in recent years as many professionals in the “baby boom” demographic moved into retirement. The past few years, however, have seen an increase in the number of trainees meaning the need for strong mentorship and knowledge sharing is more critical than ever to support the younger generation of forest professionals.

Panelists will explore why mentorship is critical in the forest sector, share personal experiences, discuss challenges and opportunities, and offer practical strategies for cultivating meaningful mentorship relationships. Whether you are an employer, an experienced professional, a forester in training, or somewhere in between, this conversation will highlight how mentorship can build a more connected and resilient forestry community moving forward.
