At the 2021 Forest Professionals British Columbia forestry conference we were introduced to the four forest landscape plan (FLP) pilot projects. These plans marked a significant shift in forest management, aiming to replace forest stewardship plans and providing clear outcomes for managing forest resources. They aimed to emphasize collaboration with First Nations, local communities, and other stakeholders, while addressing current and future challenges such as climate change and wildfire risk.
In this session, we will revisit two of the pilot projects as they near completion: the Quesnel FLP Pilot and the TFL 37 FLP Pilot. This session will provide a firsthand perspective from First Nations and industry representatives who are developing and will be responsible for implementing the plans. Participants will learn about the benefits realized through collaboration, the steps taken towards implementation, and how expectations evolved through the process. We will reflect on the original goals of the FLP pilots to assess whether they have been met, what other planning tables can learn from these projects, and whether a one-size-fits-all approach is suitable for BC.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will learn about:
- Practical aspects of developing and implementing FLPs pilots.
- Lessons other FLP tables can learn from these pilots.
- How expectations may have changed since FLPs were first contemplated to the development and implementation of these projects.
- The successes and challenges of developing these FLPs, including whether everyone shares the same definitions of success.
- How the pilot projects helped create a framework for others.
- Whether or not a one-size-fits-all approach is suitable for BC.
